Essex Tamil Society

The Essex Tamil Society offers educational and training programs for young people, children starting from age 5-6 and their families. For children and young people they mastermind Mother Tongue Classes (tamil), Religious Studies, Tamil Classical Dances and Music, Art, Sports Days and Yoga Classes for parents.

Tamil Community also known as Tamilans or simply Tamils, are a Dravidian ethnic group who speaks Tamil as mother tongue. Tamil people are one of the largest and oldest of the existing ethno-linguistic cultural groups of people in the modern world to exist without a nation of their own.

The Tamil Language can be either taught as a first language or a second language in primary, secondary or higher secondary schools. The Tamil Language is a Dravidian language spoken predominantly by Tamil people of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. It is official language in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and secondary language in the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Tamil is also an official and national language of Sri Lanka and one of the official languages of Singapore. This is one of the longest surviving classical languages in the world.

The Essex Tamil school’s intention is to enable children to speak, read and write well in Tamil, to pass on Tamil language and Tamil culture to successive generations and to learn Tamil culture along with the language. The school’s aims to work with children, young adults and elderly through language class, mother and toddle group, providing advice to participating in community activities etc.

The Essex Tamil Society also offers religious studies with Tamil. The education is focused on Tamil Hinduism, religion and colonialism, social and religious history and traditions, the development of contemporary Hinduism.

Also students learning dance or playing violin or participating in competitions will promote social, emotional and cognitive skills at the same time as boosting the child’s motivation, concentration, confidence, creativity and team work.

Another educational section is for Sports and Athletic activities. Moreover every year there would be a Sports Day.

And the last training section is Yoga Classes for parents who came to drop off their pupils and it is free of charge. Yoga is to motivate the parents into a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline. The meaning of the word "Yoga" is union, or integration of our mind, body and breath. The goal of Yoga Classes is to share yoga knowledge with the participants. As practising yogis they live with a positive and cheerful approach to life, think healthy and become healthy.
